Chinese gentleman, name not given.

This is an old joke

He talks about a servant girl and a cat. and was and is applied to unkind brothel mistresses. It may be difficult to explain my meaning to people at home who know no Chinese, but I think the following is a fair analogy. Suppose a person who knew little English heard a man say that so and so had snapped his servants head off, and took the thing quite seriously and started a great panic about the awful practise of snapping off heads and asked that investigations should be made as to what was done with the heads after they had been snapped off, he would be making the same sort of mistake as the person who takes the cat and trowser story seriously. There is in fact no cat. It is a figure of speech for an unkind

mistress.
